After considerable discernment, I recognize I’m called to create a lay-led community/religious order modeled after a large, loving, welcoming, and hard working family and call it the Family of Jesus. Like any family, I suspect it will have numerous issues. However, I trust that the family will do all it can to make the world a better place. I also understand the need to provide meaningful work for the members of this organization and OneGood will be a brand that develops from the same principles of the Family of Jesus.
OneGood will not have the same level of religious/spiritual connotation and so will hopefully provide an easily accessible space for folks that may not naturally gravitate toward the Family of Jesus. OneGood will demonstrate to the business and economic worlds that taking care of people and planet are significantly more profitable and sustainable than existing business practices that often prioritize market share or quarterly earnings.
The Family of Jesus and OneGood will be created to more fully unite all humans into one family through love, with all the quirks, issues, cultures, and theologies, etc. that family life involves.
Each organization will contribute toward more effectively articulating and demonstrating that all humans are sisters and brothers and thereby have a responsibility to each other.
A starting point for each organization includes the assumption that everybody deserves to pursue whatever educational goals they desire without finances limiting their decisions. As this assumption is realized, larger issues like access to clean water and world hunger can be addressed using the skills and education/formation that members of these organizations will have.
The Family of Jesus and OneGood will be leaders in the world community when it comes to spiritual education and philanthropy.
All members of these organizations will be expected to pursue an education that will provide them with the tools to make the world a better place. In most cases, this will involve a graduate degree, but there are many for whom formal schooling is not the answer. Once education is complete, members will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the world based on the vocation they have answered.
The formation of members of the Family will be modeled after the Jesuits, but best practices from other orders and organizations will be implemented as appropriate. The intention is that each member will be provided with the highest quality spiritual, psychological, physical, relational, and financial education available.
Lastly, each organization will help all members to develop elementary budgeting skills that will enable them to one day donate 10% of their net income to charitable causes outside each organization. In other words, part of the formation process will involve a basic financial education, which will enable members to donate at the level of tithing to outside organizations of their choosing. This will one day result in these organizations and their members providing the largest proportion of financial support around the world.
